Alice in a not so Wonderland

Dear followers,
this will not be a make-up-related post, but you know how I like to make a bond between you and me from time to time.

I am so behind with my reviews, I am sorry about that. The reason why I am so behind and quite possibly have been a bit boring as of late, is that my life is a huge busy mess at the moment.

I don't know if my international followers are aware of what is going on in Italy, but in case you don't, just know it's nothing good.
The economic recession is hitting us like a hammer, and our current government does not make it easy for us to survive.
Particularly in my field, the most recently issued laws are degrading and oppressive.
I have been working as an English teacher for more than two months now and I haven't seen a penny of what I have worked so far. This is because I work with a particular kind of contract that our smart and accomodating (for the employer) government deviced years ago. It's called a co.co.co., and it means I am some sort of collaborator and that I will only see my salary once my teaching hours finish. Which means not before February. However, because we are in times of recession, payments are all very slow and there is a chance I will not be paid before late spring.
To top it all, I am working in two different cities which means I am spending all my savings and energy in commuting. It's a 2 hrs train ride, so you know it is nothing funny.

What's more, I have finally been accepted for a PhD. I can now hear you saying "Wow, girl, you're going to be a researcher! This is your first step into a bright academic future!". Little do you know.
Technically I am a researcher, but because I passed the selection fairly, based on what I know and on the value of the research I am going to make, I didn't get a scholarship.
I know this sounds completely out of any logic, but this is what happens in Italy. If you know people, then you'll have money and all you want. If you are educated, driven, talented, and determinated...you can work for free so that the others can take advantage of your work.

So, yes, this is my life now: trying to survive in this stark raving world, trying to find a solution, trying to find a way to get a scholarship to do my doctoral research abroad. Somewhere where intelligence, culture, education, and most importantly HUMAN DIGNITY is valued. Somewhere where all those things are a parameter to measure how much you are worth, and what you truly deserve.
I wish I could be proud of being Italian. I really wish. I wish my decision to literally run away (rather fly, since I live on an island) was a deliberate choice, not a dictat that has been imposed to me by a bunch of greedy politicians that are driving the country to decay.

The truth is, though, that this situation is depressing. It should not happen. It is totally unfair. My parents have nothing more than a high school degree. They wanted my future to look brighter than theirs. I was raised to believe that knowledge is power. As I am growing older, knowledge seems to me like famine and exploitation, instead. Since the age of 15, I have been working and studying to afford paying my higher education.
Now I wake up in the morning and tell my own self "remind me, once again, why did I do this?"

And since misery loves company, my grandfather has been in the hospital for almost a month now, and he's been feeling really poorly.

In conclusion, this is why I haven't been posting many FOTD's lately (which I truly love doing): because I just haven't been in the mood to smile.

On the bright side, I still have something that keeps me alive: the love of my boyfriend. The most special person I could ever meet. Someone who can put a smile on my face. Someone who knows what true love is, and how to show it. Someone I know will stand by me even in the worst times.
We now live in two different cities, so I do miss him loads.

Just do not unsubscribe, please. I hope you enjoy reading the reviews I'm posting, and that you find them useful, at least.
I will be back with FOTD's soon. I promise. I just need to find the will to smile again. Bear with me. Or tell me a joke to make me smile :)

Have a good night, lovely ladies.

KIKO Siberian Flowers: Automatic Precision Lip Pencils, Cream Infusion Stylo, Glass Shine Lipgloss - review and swatches

I will get on with my round-up of the products from KIKO's new LE collection, Siberian Flowers.

AUTOMATIC PRECISION LIP PENCIL ( € 5.90)

Automatic lip pencil, not too soft, not too hard, which ensures good color pay-off and precision.
It features a very useful gum blender, which I found a great idea, and of course, a pencil sharpener.
I loved the how the colors match the lipsticks in the collection, but are also versatile and can be worn with whatever other lipstick you have in your collection.

Sfumino e temperino

GLASS SHINE LIPGLOSS (€ 7,20)

Rich in fine glitters and sheer. Light consistency, although perceptible. Not sticky at all.
Really glossy, with the glitters that help creating an illusion of thick lips.
The applicator is quite ingeneous and new, as it rotates, ensuring a precise and even application.
Although, I have heard many disagreeing opinions on that, I believe this applicator works very well on the shape of my lips.
My favorite of them is Ice Quartz

Glass Shine Lipgloss (Sx - Dx ): 01 - Ice Quartz, 02 - Silky Beige, 03 - Spicy Mauve

L'unica pecca secondo me è l'odore.

Packaging-wise this products gets a 5/5. It is very elegant, with its golden tone and feminine designs all over the cap.
The product itself is almost creamy, with a coverage that varies based on the shades, as you will be able to tell from the swatches. My only gripe is the smell, which seemed fine at first, but grew a bit funky on me. However, this comes down to personal tastes, really. In fact, my mother still likes their smell.
As regards to durability, this is also variable. The lighter shades tend to last the least, while the darker ones have a good durability.
They will never beat my beloved Red Emotion Lipsticks, but they are very good and a nice gift for Christmas indeed!

Luce artificiale, senza flash.
Avete avuto modo di provare qualcuno di questi prodotti?

KIKO Bling Blush review (Siberian Flowers L.E. collection)

Bling Blush is KIKO's blusher for the L.E. collection Siberian Flowers.
Bling Blush is one of those baked blushers with some veins of sparkles running through it.
The sparkles are not excessive, though.
Before getting into further detail about the blush itself, I want to focus your attention on the packaging:
the boxes themselves are quite nice, purple and lilac, with a wintry Russian-like drawing, and golden writings all over them, which introduce you to the actual packaging of the product.
Golden, fine, and very elegant, this packaging also features a Swarowski crystal that makes it oh-so-precious.
It also comes into a cream-colored velvet pouch.
Packaging: 10/10!
Chilled Pink 05

Celebrity Rose - 02

Superb Bronze - 03

L'effetto è molto setoso, nonostante i brillantini contenuti nelle venature.

Color pay-off is medium, but can be built to intense.
Texture is satin, nevertheless the presence of sparkly veins.
Celebrity Rose is the shade I liked the most. I wear it very often, and think it gives a natural, sophisticated look. It is also suitable for most skintones.
Chilled Pink is an intense pink which would look at its best on very fair skins, whereas Superb Bronze is versatile, and can be used as a bronzer as well.
Clearly, be careful when you use the latter shade in winter: you don't want to end up like Snooki from Jersey Shore.
Here are some swatches:

Bling Blush is available in 6 shades, at € 14,90, and can be purchased in KIKO stores all around Italy (and some in Europe - as far as I know Spain and Germany are served), or alternatively on their official site, following this link.

Bdellium Tools Professional Antibacterial brushes review

Last month I have been sent a full set of eye brushes with their roll-up pouch from the kind Daniel, over Bdellium Tools.
I wasn't expecting such generousity, so firstly I really want to thank him and the brand for giving me such an amazing opportunity.
As you can see, the brushes come with a faux leather roll-up pouch, which has lots of space for different brushes and four side pockets, where you can keep your sponges and puffs. Great if you are a mua or if you have to travel.

These are the twelve brushes that come in this set. I will quickly list their characteristics of each one of them, and my take.
I have washed these several times both with a cleanser and with shampoo, and they resisted pretty well.
They are marketed as professional brushes with an antibacterial technology embedded, and although I cannot provide any opinion on the antibacterial properties of that (there is no study incorporated on the site, therefore it is hard to have an idea), I can say that I have never have any kind of problem with these brushes.
They hardly shed, and this is a great start in my opinion.

  1.  #714 FLAT EYE DEFINER: Potentially a good brush for your eyeliner, although I'm completely useless at making the best out of it. It is hard to use on yourself, but it still is quite a precise brush for your eyebrows.
  2. #710 EYELINER: This is a bit too soft for my own tastes, but still a decent pointed eyeliner brush. It provide a nice thin line around the eyes, and can be nice with both cream liners or liquid liners.
  3. #733 LASH: To be honest, I use this to brush through my eyebrows and keep them tidy. I really love this as it is sturdy and not flimpsy at all. It is a very nice comb for eyebrows.
  4. # 755 SMUDGE: Nice smudger brush for smoke out your liner, or it can also be a very good brush for your lips.
  5. #760 LINER/BROW: This is the tiniest little angle brush I have ever seen. Nevertheless it is very precise. I use this for precision works with my cream eyeliner. I really really like it.
  6. #763 SMALL ANGLE: As the name suggests, a small angle brush supposedly for eyeliner or for your brows. this is bigger than my Sigma and Ruby and Millie one, and is a lot softer. So soft, it is not precise at all. This is probably the one brush that I don't really like. It also lost his shape a bit. I really hope Bdellium will improve this brush.

  1. #766 ANGLED SHADOW: Regular angle shadow brush. Very soft and nice for blending as well. // Normalissimo pennello angolato per ombretto. Molto soffice e buono per sfumare oltretutto.
  2. # 722 SMALL SHADER: I use this brush for concealer instead of eyeshadow and it works really fine. Bristles are not too soft, yet not hard and they are very dense. Like it.
  3. #776 BLENDING: this is a replica for the infamous 217 brush by MAC. I love it! Really do. It provides great blending. I have noticed the bristles aren't as soft as my Sigma SS217, but they aren't scratchy either and the blending is just supreme.
  4. # 778 LARGE SHADOW: Very similar to the large shadow brushes used by Sam&Nic Chapman and Tanya Burr, this brush is lovely. When you want to go fast on your smokey eye, this is the brush you really need. It provides one big swipe of color to the lid and crease, and then you'd only need to blend very lightly on the crease and the job's done. Fantastic. A definite must-have! Fantastico. Decisamente un must!
  5.  #780 PENCIL: This brush is way better than the pencil brushes I have from Sigma. I have really really loved this for working in the crease or the lower lashline area. It is very stiff and dense. Just the ideal pencil brush. Two thumbs up!
  6. #785 TAPERED BLENDING: I think this tapered blending brush is more similar to the old shape 224 by MAC. Which makes it one of my favorite blending brushes. Soft bristles, and it has a tapered tip, so it makes it easier to blend in the crease than the new shape 224. Another brush that I really love!

Bdellium Tools brushes can be purchased directly from their site. The add to cart button will take you to their amazon store, so don't worry, this is not a mistake.
They do come from the United States and this set in particular is now on offer for $ 45,12 - which I think is very good value for the money.
Their shipping is fast and safe, so in conclusion, I do recommend these brushes and think they are a good alternative to Sigma, at least as far as the eye brushes are concerned.

Simple nail art with Illamasqua Scarab nail polish and Powdered Metal in Ether

Illamasqua's Powdered Metal in Ether is lovely and versatile. It can be used for nail art as well!
I just used Illamasqua's Scarab and before it dried, I dipped a q-tip into the powder and tapped it above my nails. Here is the result:

So what do you think? Yay or nay?

Benefit Some Kind-a Gorgeous Review

When it comes to Benefit, I am really a newbie. I have only started using their products in the summer, and since I loved them. I thought Some Kind-a Gorgeous could live up to the expectations...little did I know....

prodotti solo quest'estate e mi son piaciuti molto.

This product is marketed as a "foundation faker", and no other description would have fit this product more perfectly. Not for the reasons they want us to believe in, though.
I quote from Benefit's website, this is described as an "oil-free, cream-to-powder finish fakes foundation...it's silky, even perfection for your complexion".

"oil-free, cream-to-powder finish fakes foundation...it's silky, even perfection for your complexion".

Well, I have to say that either I have the wrong product, or the description does not really correspond to the reality.
Now, I know that a lot of people would comment saying that they love this, but they probably have a different skin than mine, so Benefit should warn people this is for some skin types only.

On my skin, I have found this foundation does not set as powder at all. It remains very creamy, and shiny, in a way that does not give you a glow, but more of a grease.
It transfers on anything, and you cannot touch your face at all, otherwise you would compromise your entire makeup.
Coverage-wise, this is really more of a tinted moisturizer (eventhough it is not a moisturizer) than a foundation, therefore if you have large pores, zits, or general imperfections, just do not trust this.
Another thing that I have hated is the fact that if you smile a lot, this tends to form very thick lines around your eyes, making you appear as an 80 year old lady. Definitely not what I look for at the age of 26!

The only nice thing about this foundation is the packaging, which is really cute. But what's packaging for, when the product is not worth it?
At $28,00 (or £ 21.50) this is not really something you would buy just for the packaging or just to try it.
Quite fortunately, I purchased it in a blog sale (Louise's) for a very small fraction of the price, so I do not regret buying it.

Don't worry, I'm not a Benefit hater, but I think the brand is actually a hit and miss for certain things, and to think that it is even oh-so-expensive does not really encourage me to buy without swatching or trying first!

Urban Decay Get Baked Palette - review and swatches

A while ago I was sent this Urban Decay Get Baked palette in an International Swap with Michelle from Lipstick Rules.
Lara (if you are Italian, then you may know her under the name Chienkiri on Youtube) was interested in a review, so here it is.
This is how the palette looks like in its packaging. It comes with a mini size of Primer Potion in Sin.

This is the actual packaging, which I find really stylish. But then again, most Urban Decay products are :)

This is the real size of the palette, just in case it looks big in other pictures. It's not.

This is a lousy swatch of Primer Potion in Sin on my hand. It's a champagne colored primer and it is a bit shimmery, but nothing too forlorn.

And here is the open palette. As you can see, there are four eyeshadows and a travel size of their 24/7 glide-on pencil in bourbon, which is one of my faves ever!

And here are the swatches of the shadows and the eye pencil.
Please zoom in to see them in all their glory.
I love Urban Decay eyeshadows for they are buttery soft and incredibly blendable.
I have to say, their texture is amazing. They don't just sit on your skin. They merge with it.
Baked is the one shadow that really grabs your attention: it's a bronzy gold shade and it is so powerful!
I find this palette to be very versatile for both summer and winter, what do you think?

To be honest with you, I have no idea how much this retails outside the US - and especially here in Italy, I don't know its price as I do not have a Sephora store near me.
Guess you'll just have to check that, or try ebay ;)

KIKO Double Glam eyeliner (L.E. Siberian Flowers Collection) - review and swatches

KIKO's Double Glam Eyeliners are the Italian counterpart of Urban Decay's 24/7 glide-on pencils.
Therefore, if you have always wanted to hav Urban Decay's liners for their well-known qualities,
I highly suggest you try these ones from KIKO, instead. For a fraction of the price,
they work exactly like the ones from the popular American brand.

- PIGMENTAZIONE OTTIMA;
-OTTIMA SCRIVENZA;
-MORBIDEZZA;
-OTTIMA DURATA.

These pencils, coming in a wide range of colors and effects (some of them are pearliscent, some others are glittery, and some others are matte) have some real excellent qualities:
- GREAT PIGMENTATION;
- GREAT COLOR PAY-OFF;
- SOFTNESS;
- GREAT LASTING POWER.

Some of these Double Glam Eyeliners cannot be used on the inner rim of the eye.
In particular, the ones with the glitters that may cause some problems.
I normally wear the other ones on the waterlines, and I have no problems.
Here are the swatches of these fantastic eyeliner pencils:

And this is the super cute packaging they come in, and if you could understand a little about my
personality, you know I like it so much that I could never throw it away.

I highly recommend these pencils, which only retail for € 6,90 and are available on
KIKO's official website at:

Guest Blogger Review: Vichy Dermablend fondotinta e correttore by Daniela Gi

* AN ENGLISH VERSION OF THIS REVIEW WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM NEXT WEEK. SORRY GIRLS BUT I AM AWAY*

Ciao a tutte,

BREVE NOTA SUI FONDI/CORRETTORI IN STICK

Madina Milano Trilli Fairy Dust Powder review and swatches - in anteprima!
