Pennelli da sfumatura: tipi, funzionalità, marchi che li producono

[una rapida premessa: ancora non hanno attivato l'adsl nella mia nuova casa, perciò la regolarità dei post riprenderà non appena avrò una connessione decente.]

Questo articolo mi è stato ispirato da una conversazione avuta qualche giorno fa con una mia amica (se mi leggi, ciao Ele!). Infastidita dal fatto di non riuscire a fare uno smoky eye da manuale, la mia amica mi ha chiesto dove poter trovare dei veri e propri pennelli da sfumatura, quelli che inglese (lo dico per onor di cronaca, visto che i siti in cui si possono trovare son tutti in inglese) si chiamano blending brushes.

Ora, con tutti i video che girano su youtube e le cosiddette guru, penso che ormai sapremo tutte cosa sono i pennelli da sfumatura (è intuibile anche dal nome) e che i due più efficaci sono il MAC 217 ed il MAC 224.Questi due pennellli hanno propositi diversi, nonostante lo scopo ultimo di entrambi sia quello di dare una sfumatura al nostro trucco. Entrambi hanno una forma "a campana" (o "a goccia", se vogliamo), ma uno dei due è più grande ed ha una circonferenza circolare (il 224), mentre l'altro è più piccolo e piatto (ha una circonferenza più...ovale, il 217). Inoltre, i pennelli tipo il 217 sono un tantino più "rigidi".

Che tipo di sfumatura da il 217?
Una sfumatura perfetta, graduale, ma ben visibile sulla piega palpebrale. E' utile anche in mancanza di altri pennelli per stendere semplicemente l'ombretto su tutta la palpebra. Insomma, è il tipo di pennello che si deve utilizzare quando si vuole che il colore da sfumare sia bello evidente.

Che tipo di sfumatura da il 224?
Una sfumatura che dissolve il colore dalla piega palpebrale fino all'arcata sopraccigliare. Questo tipo di pennello non è fatto per caricare il colore da sfumare. Invece, sarà molto utile per sfumare veramente molto il colore che steso sulla piega palpebrale.
E' anche un buon pennello da correttore (anche data la natura delle sue setole), ma questa è tutt'altra storia.

Ora, siccome so bene che non tutti possono permettersi i pennelli MAC (io sono la prima, visto che se prima non potevo permettermeli per motivi finanziari, ora non potrei comunque comprarli per l'assenza di MAC nella mia regione), quello che mi propongo di fare con questo post è darvi una lista di aziende che producono questo tipo di pennelli, in una versione meno costosa.

La prima su tutte è sicuramente la Sigma, un'azienda statunitense di cui sono ambasciatrice (faccio parte del loro affiliate program*). Sigma ha le migliori occasioni a livello globale per quanto riguarda il rapporto qualità/prezzo.
Il loro simil-224 si chiama E40 (Tapered Blending) e costa $9,00 se comprato individualmente (anche se io suggerisco sempre i kit, perché si risparmia sempre sul costo dei pennelli, che tanto servono sempre tutti).
Il loro simil-217 si chiama E25 ed anche questo ha un costo di $9,00 (se poi acquistate un kit, di solito questo pennello, in versione mini è omaggio!)
Questi due rappresentano la riproduzione più fedele dei pennelli MAC.

Un'altra azienda che produce pennelli da sfumatura simili a quelli MAC, che ho anche provato è la Bdellium.
Anche questa è una ditta statunitense, che si è specializzata in pennelli anti-batterici (di cui ho fatto la recensione qui).
Il loro simil 217 si chiama 776, mentre la replica del 224 si chiama 785.
Sono dei buonissimi pennelli!

Ci sono, poi, dei marchi che producono dei pennelli simili a quelli MAC, ma che non ho ancora provato. Non posso fare commenti sulla qualità di questi, ma posso sempre segnalarveli per onor di cronaca:
Cozzette (disponibile su Love Make Up) produce una replica del 224 che ha chiamato S150;
Crown Brushes ha svariate riproduzioni di questo tipo di pennelli nelle loro numerose linee. Cambia sicuramente la qualità e la composizione delle setole. Occorre sfogliare un po' il catalogo, perché queste forme sono reiterate, dipende da quanto volete spender voi.

Anche Boots N 7 produce una mini replica del 217. E' abbastanza decente (io ne possiedo due), soprattutto se si deve portare in viaggio, ma sicuramente non ha la stessa qualità dei quelli Sigma o Bdellium. E' molto morbido, però.

Mi spiace ragazze, ma Real Techniques by Sam Chapman non produce questa tipologia di pennelli.
E' inutile dire che ogni altra forma di pennello da sfumatura non da affatto lo stesso tipo di sfumatura di questi pennelli, perciò non aspettatevi grandi cose da un pennello tipo quello elf (nonostante sia comunque un buon pennello).

An insight into blending brushes: types, functionality, brands

[warning: I am trying to type this while I am still mooching off of a nearby internet connection. I have no idea if, by the time I will have finished typing this, I will still be able to post it. They told me today, my own connection will be sorted withing 20 - 30 days]

I had an inspiring conversation with my friend two days ago about brushes. She told me she couldn't get the hang of smoky eyes, and while I think that is mostly due to her (our!) eye shape, I agree with her that the right blending brushes would help a lot!

Now, with all the beauty "gurus" around youtube, I think we all know what a blending eye brush is, and that the two most effective ones are the MAC 217 and MAC 224.
Of course, the two serve different purposes even if their mission is to give a good blend. Both are domed-shaped brushes, but one is bigger and circular in circumference (224) and the other one is smaller and flatter (more like an oval-type of circumference, the 217). Also, 217-type of brushes are stiffer than 224's.

What can you do with a 217? 
Get a perfect, gradual, but visible blend on the crease. Also, you can use the flat side of it to pack on some eyeshadow on the eyelid. This is the type of brush you want to use to pack on the color that you need to blend.

What can you do with a 224? 
Just blend. Dissolve the color from the crease right up to the brow bone. This brush is not meant to pat on the color and blend it. On the other hand, it will help you very much when you want the colour that you previously put on the crease to fade into the brown bone.
It is also a good concealer brush (given the nature of its bristles and its size), but that's another story.

Now, I understand that not everyone - for many reasons - can get hold of MAC brushes (I myself, could not afford them until this year, and now I can't get them because I don't have a MAC store near me) so my aim with this post will be to provide you with a list of good dupes for them, since not many companies produce their blending eye brushes in these two shapes.

First on the list is Sigma brushes, a US-based company I am ambassador of. They have the best quality/price deals worldwide, and they were my first real brushes ever.
Their dupe for the MAC 224 is called E40 (Tapared Blending) and costs $ 9,00 if bought individually (I personally recommend kits where this brush can be found, because kits are always the best deals).
Their dupe for the MAC 217 is called E25 and also costs $ 9,00 (when you buy a kit, most of the time this brush, in its travel size, comes for free!)
These two are the most similar and faithful replicas I've ever come across.

Another brand I tried that makes very good dupes is Bdellium. This is another US-based manufacturer that specializes into anti-bacterial brushes (I reviewed their brushes here).
Their replica for the 217 is called 776, while their dupe for the 224 brush is called 785.
These are very good brushes too!

Some brands I have not tried yet produce their own replicas, and while I cannot comment on their quality, I can always point out to you the brushes:
Cozzette (available throught Love Make Up) makes an S150 (224) brush.
Crown Brushes also makes several dupes in their lines. The brushes are the same shape, but the bristles composition might change.

 Boots N7 also makes a travel size replica of the MAC 217. It is a decent brush, but cannot surely equal the Sigma or Bdellium brushes.

Sorry girls, but Real Techniques by Sam Chapman does not produce these shapes.

Any other blending brush that is shapped differently (eg. elf) will not have the same blending.

Bdellium Tools Professional Antibacterial brushes review

 Last month I have been sent a full set of eye brushes with their roll-up pouch from the kind Daniel, over Bdellium Tools.
I wasn't expecting such generousity, so firstly I really want to thank him and the brand for giving me such an amazing opportunity.
As you can see, the brushes come with a faux leather roll-up pouch, which has lots of space for different brushes and four side pockets, where you can keep your sponges and puffs. Great if you are a mua or if you have to travel.

Il mese scorso mi è arrivato un set completo di pennelli per occhi con relativa custodia, inviatomi da Daniel di Bdellium Tools.

Non mi aspettavo tanta generosità, perciò vorrei iniziare ringraziandolo per avermi dato questa possibilità. 

Come potete vedere, i penelli di questo set arrivano in una custodia in simil-pelle in cui si possono tenere tanti pennelli. La custodia è inoltre dotata di 4 taschine laterali, in cui tenere spugnette di vario genere.

These are the twelve brushes that come in this set. I will quickly list their characteristics of each one of them, and my take.
I have washed these several times both with a cleanser and with shampoo, and they resisted pretty well.
They are marketed as professional brushes with an antibacterial technology embedded, and although I cannot provide any opinion on the antibacterial properties of that (there is no study incorporated on the site, therefore it is hard to have an idea), I can say that I have never have any kind of problem with these brushes.
They hardly shed, and this is a great start in my opinion.

Ne elencherò rapidamente le caratteristiche e dirò la mia opinione su ognuno.

Li ho lavati tante volte, sia col cleanser che con lo shampoo e hanno resistito abbastanza bene.

Sono pubblicizzati come pennelli professionali con una tecnologia antibatterica incorporata, e nonostante non possa esprimere alcun parere riguardo a queste presupposte proprietà antibatteriche (visto che non c'è uno studio pubblicato sul sito e dunque è parecchio difficile farsi un'idea), posso dire di non avere mai avuto problemi con questi pennelli. 

Non perdono quasi mai peli, e questo è già un buon punto di partenza.

1.  #714 FLAT EYE DEFINER: Potentially a good brush for your eyeliner, although I'm completely useless at making the best out of it. It is hard to use on yourself, but it still is quite a precise brush for your eyebrows. // Potenzialmente è un buon pennello per l'eyeliner, sebbene io sia completamente negata ad usarlo come si deve. E' un po' difficile da usare su sé stesse, ma è comunque un pennello abbastanza preciso da usare per le sopracciglia.
2. #710 EYELINER: This is a bit too soft for my own tastes, but still a decent pointed eyeliner brush. It provide a nice thin line around the eyes, and can be nice with both cream liners or liquid liners. // Questo è un pochino troppo morbido per i miei gusti, ma pur sempre un pennello abbastanza decente. Permette di creare una linea fine per delineare gli occhi ed è buono sia con gli eyeliner in crema che con quelli liquidi.
3. #733 LASH: To be honest, I use this to brush through my eyebrows and keep them tidy. I really love this as it is sturdy and not flimpsy at all. It is a very nice comb for eyebrows. // Ad essere sincera, lo uso per pettinare le sopracciglia e tenerle in ordine. Mi piace parecchio perché è bello resistente e stabile. Non si svita. Mi piace particolarmente per pettinare le sopracciglia.
4. # 755 SMUDGE: Nice smudger brush for smoke out your liner, or it can also be a very good brush for your lips. I love it because of the multi-fuction // E' un bel pennellino di precisione per fare smokey con la matita, oppure può essere usato anche come pennello labbra, con buoni risultati. Mi piace molto per il suo essere polifunzionale. 
5. #760 LINER/BROW: This is the tiniest little angle brush I have ever seen. Nevertheless it is very precise. I use this for precision works with my cream eyeliner. I really really like it. // E' il pennello angolato più piccolo che abbia mai visto. Tuttavia è molto preciso. Lo uso per lavori di precisione con l'eyeliner in crema. Mi piace davvero tanto.
6. #763 SMALL ANGLE: As the name suggests, a small angle brush supposedly for eyeliner or for your brows. this is bigger than my Sigma and Ruby and Millie one, and is a lot softer. So soft, it is not precise at all. This is probably the one brush that I don't really like. It also lost his shape a bit. I really hope Bdellium will improve this brush. // Come viene suggerito dal nome, questo è un pennello angolato piccolo, che dovrebbe essere usato per l'eyeliner o per le sopracciglia. E' più soffice del Sigma o del Ruby and Millie che possiedo. Molto più soffice. Non è affatto preciso, infatti. Probabilmente è l'unico pennello che non mi sia davvero piaciuto. Ha anche perso un po' la forma. Spero vivamente che la Bdellium lo migliori.

1. #766 ANGLED SHADOW: Regular angle shadow brush. Very soft and nice for blending as well. // Normalissimo pennello angolato per ombretto. Molto soffice e buono per sfumare oltretutto. 
2. # 722 SMALL SHADER: I use this brush for concealer instead of eyeshadow and it works really fine. Bristles are not too soft, yet not hard and they are very dense. Like it. // Lo uso per il correttore invece che per l'ombretto e funziona bene. Le setole non sono troppo soffici, ne dure, e sono invece molto dense. Mi piace.
3. #776 BLENDING: this is a replica for the infamous 217 brush by MAC. I love it! Really do. It provides great blending. I have noticed the bristles aren't as soft as my Sigma SS217, but they aren't scratchy either and the blending is just supreme. // questo pennello è una copia del famosissimo 217 di MAC. Io lo adoro. Veramente. Ha una sfumatura bellissima. Ho notato che le setole non sono morbide quanto quelle del mio Sigma SS217, ma non prudono nemmeno e la sfumatura viene fuori divinamente. 
4. # 778 LARGE SHADOW: Very similar to the large shadow brushes used by Sam&Nic Chapman and Tanya Burr, this brush is lovely. When you want to go fast on your smokey eye, this is the brush you really need. It provides one big swipe of color to the lid and crease, and then you'd only need to blend very lightly on the crease and the job's done. Fantastic. A definite must-have! // Molto simile al pennello usato dalle sorelle Chapman e da Tanya Burr, questo pennello è davvero bellissimo. Quando volete fare uno smokey veloce, questo è il pennello di cui avete davvero bisogno. Potete fare una "passata" veloce di colore sulla palpebra mobili e e sulla piega palpebrale, e poi dovrete solo sfumare molto leggermente sulla piega e il lavoro è fatto. Fantastico. Decisamente un must!
5.  #780 PENCIL: This brush is way better than the pencil brushes I have from Sigma. I have really really loved this for working in the crease or the lower lashline area. It is very stiff and dense. Just the ideal pencil brush. Two thumbs up! // Questo pennello è migliore della sua versione Sigma che già possiedo. Mi è piaciuto davvero tantissimo per lavorare sulla piega palpebrale e sulla rima inferiore dell'occhio. Le setole non sono di quelle troppo morbide, al contrario permettono precisione e sono molto dense. Proprio il pennello a matita ideale. Pollice su per questo pennello!
6. #785 TAPERED BLENDING: I think this tapered blending brush is more similar to the old shape 224 by MAC. Which makes it one of my favorite blending brushes. Soft bristles, and it has a tapered tip, so it makes it easier to blend in the crease than the new shape 224. Another brush that I really love! // Penso che questo pennello per sfumatura sia più simile al vecchio 224 di MAC. Il che fa di esso uno dei miei pennelli da sfumatura preferiti. Le setole sono morbide, ha una punta un po' più affusolata rispetto alla nuova versone del 224 e ciò fa si che la sfumatura sia migliore e più facile nella piega. Un altro pennello che mi è piaciuto davvero tanto!!!

They do come from the United States and this set in particular is now on offer for $ 45,12 - which I think is very good value for the money.
Their shipping is fast and safe, so in conclusion, I do recommend these brushes and think they are a good alternative to Sigma, at least as far as the eye brushes are concerned.
